Topps Chewing Gum Company's   biggest conpetition in 1952 was the already established Bowman Gum Co. of Philadelphia, PA.  Bowman had started issuing baseball card sets in 1948.

Bowman unsucessfully sued Topps for the rights to sell bubble gum by using baseball cards in the same pack as the gum.

The competition between Topps and Bowman finaly came to an end when Topps bought out Bowman in 1956.
