Gum, Inc., a Philadelphia company founded by Jacob Warren
Bowman in 1927, had produced a series of
baseball cards known as "Play Ball" sets from 1939 to 1941. Halting production
during WW-2, they started
back producing sports cards in 1948 under the Bowman Gum, Inc. title. Their
first baseball set as Bowman Gum
would be a 48 card set of black and white cards in a 2 1/16" x 2 1/2" size
format.
